One reader on my Eons group, Careers for Boomers and 50 Plus, posed this tough challenge:

Keep on Working!

I am relocating to Northern California with my spouse, who was recently promoted by her company. We are moving to the Bay Area in September 07′.I have been a successful business development/ sales manager for many years. I will be seeking new employment in this area. I am concentrating on the renewable energy/solar energy industry. Can anyone offer me any leads on known positions or companies that I may meet with.Thank you very much for your assistance.

Jeff

Dear Jeff,

That was a challenge — new city, green industry, no leads. I am a big believer in playing web detective. What that means is that I can find almost any information I want as long as I sleuth long enough and ask enough questions to the Google or Yahoo search engines. I looked up “renewable energy/solar energy industry, Northern CAlifornia” and got a slew of fantastic resources.

Understand that whenever you are niched, it may be harder to find the specific jobs — make sure to post your resume on niche boards. In addition to Monster, Careerbuilder, Gen Plus, post on Dice and search on Simply Hired and Indeed (both catch most of the online listings on their sites). New niche boards pop up every day, so look for energy or green job boards. Also do a search for recruiters specializing in your skill set and NorCal. Keep us posted.

There is an Energy Web Directory on the California Energy Commission website. They list many renewable energy/solar energy companies on their site. Here is the link

Hope that gets you started.

Wendy

Over a year in the making and with thanks to some terrific beta testers, this introductory edition is now available through the Gen Plus shop.

What is “Keep Dreaming…”? This e-workbook is a course that brings together the concepts behind strategic business planning to your life plan! Using proven business and marketing strategies in this electronic workbook, you will be able to develop a Strategic Plan for moving into the next phase of your life.

I’ve always believed that one can manifest one’s own destiny. Every time I have set my sights on a goal and created a strong vision and a plan to get there…guess what? I’ve been able to do just that. So I’m urging you to leave your fear behind you! I’ve taken the best of what I’ve learned in my over 15 years as a corporate executive, managing hundreds of people, creating mult-million dollar budgets, creating and executing strategic and marketing plans for significant operations in both the US and Canada, and re-shaped it, in a very user-friendly way, to help you achieve your personal strategies, targets and goals.

The course incorporates easy-to-understand worksheets and forms, that will help you identify objectives, hit your goals and measure results. At the end of this course, you will have a written plan and a developed approach to achieving success for your future.

And because of the many, many questions I’ve gotten from my readers over the years about using computer skills, I’ve created this course so that no computer skills are necessary – other than you being able to click through to order the e-workbook, and then to download and print out the 50 plus pages. I am dedicated to your success, and I am offering this limited introductory edition for $14.95 (retail price is $29.99). Why? Because I really want you to take control of your destiny and the only way to do that is to create it. It doesn’t matter what type of person you are, what resources you have, or where you live. All that matters is that you have a dream and you just aren’t sure how to get there. Do you remember the movie “Field of Dreams”? “Build it and they will come.” That was the promise. Let me help you build it.

The book is not yet available in print, however, if you would like to be on a wait list for the printed publication (it will retail at around $99.95) rather than the e-workbook, please email me at wspiegel@genplususa.com and I’ll make sure to let you know when it is available.

A great question was posted today on my Career Group over on Eons. Here it is, along with my response.

I have a question. If you are going on an interview and you are told you will be before a panel of people, can you bring someone to sit in on the interview with you? Also, if you ask permission to do so, can they say no? — WykedJ.

Dear WykedJ,

You pose a great question. As a business woman, who has interviewed hundreds of jobseekers over my career, I don’t see any value in bringing someone with you to an interview. When you have the opportunity to interview, (whether in front of a panel or an individual) you are
being offered the chance to put your best foot forward. If you appear to need someone for support (or to bolster a legal standing), how will that strengthen their view of you?

While I am not a lawyer, age discrimination is very tough to prove, so your best shot is to go proudly and confidently into any interview. Dress appropriately and in a current look. Make sure you have researched the company well and have your questions for them at the ready. If you are the best candidate, then a company will hire you. If not, then they didn’t consider you the best candidate for their position.

But ask yourself one important question — are the companies (or industries) you are interviewing for age-biased? If you are a creative, working in marketing, sales, fashion, programming, then age is a disadvantage. Make sure you are targeting companies that will appreciate what you have to offer them. You cannot force a company to hire you. You can only compel them to want you on their team.

Wendy

Bloggers LOVE to get comments, but the 50 plus demographic still prefers emailing to publishing comments. As well, I get emails from some of you who are frustrated trying to figure out how to make a comment from the feed you receive from Feedblitz. So to help you navigate the blog-comment world here’s the easy 1-2-3. Email me at wspiegel@genplususa.com if you are still having problems after reading this post.

If you are a subscriber, that means you chose to get my articles via your email (either by subscribing on the blog or by taking out a membership at www.genplususa.com). The header tells you that the email is coming from Feedblitz. It’s just like getting home delivery of the LA or NY Times…but via email.

You can’t reply to the email to make a comment on the topic, just like you can’t comment directly to your newspaper in your living room. Nor can you click into comments from the emailed article. You need to go to the source (i.e. the blog), so either click on the article TITLE to redirect to the blog, or go directly to the blogsite: http://genplus.blogspot.com to make a comment. Once at the home page for the article, you’ll see a little line at the bottom that gives a number of comments. It looks like this:

Posted by Wendy, founder, Gen Plus at 11:14 AM 6 comments

Click on the link for comments (doesn’t matter whether there are 0 comments or 100 comments) and write in the pop-up box. You’ll be able to preview your comment before posting. You can post with your user name if you have one, as yourself, or anonymously. Because I moderate comments, you’ll have to enter a special code (funny looking letters and numbers in a colored box) in order to post. I’ll get a notification of the comment and provided that your comment isn’t spam or offensive, I’ll allow the post. Simple as that.

When you write something that catches someone else’s imagination, there can be very interesting dialogue. I love when you email me, but other people would love to hear what you have to say as well. Now, go make yourself heard!

I run a group on eons called Careers for Boomers and 50 Plus. This is one of the posts this week, from Maddi which you can also find under the Ask Wendy label.

“Please allow me to vent here for a minute. Do employers not know we have bills to pay too? Do employers not know we are one of the best groups to hire from? ( we = baby-boomers.)
I’m just a high school grad, no college… but I’ve work in jobs that most don’t want… nursing homes, fast-food, etc. I’ve not worked in about 3 yr’s…. I have been looking for 3 yr’s!, ( 1 yr solid, other 2 off and on.) and kept track of where I go, and when I went around to check on the apps.
Seems all anybody want’s now are the kids. Are there any home-based jobs out there… legit.
Signed…. Too old work, too young to retire. (Maddi)”

Hi Maddi,

Because I’ve been writing for a long time, I get approached often by home-based business operators looking to tap into our demographic. So far, I’ve not come across one that I’d be able to attach my name to. The one career opportunity that does seem to come up more often is working as a caregiver. That is not a home-based business, but you do have more freedom than a straight 9 – 5′er. If anyone knows of home-based businesses they can recommend…we’d love to hear from you! Add your comments here or on the eons group and I’ll make sure to get the word out.

Wendy

How did they manage thereafter. The plan I have awards me about $82,500 free of Federal and local State tax. I do also have 401K & IRA investments but would prefer not touching them for about 5 years so as to allow them to grow and get nearer to that amount the gurus say I should have saved at 63 y/o ( but didn’t.)

I frequently receive questions through “Ask Wendy” on the Gen Plus blog. This one addresses the heart of the issues surrounding 50 plus jobseekers.

I am 52 and have been unemployed, after 30 years in Banking, for the last 4 years. How can I convince others that I don’t care if I’m over qualified for a clerk or receptionist job and get them to choose me over the 20 something’s out there?

TB

Dear TB

Thank you for your question. You are facing exactly the sort of issues that most 50 plussers are dealing with right now. You’ve got lots of experience and are willing to take a position with less responsibility even if you are overqualified because you need or want to keep earning.

The most important thing is to realize that, in fact, it is very tough to change the minds of employers and it may take a really concerted effort to find a job. There are, however, many things that you can do and I’m confident that if you keep up the search you will find a job.

The first thing to do is to try to get interviews. That means you need to make use of every job board (Gen Plus included) that you can find. You do not EVER need to pay to search for or apply to jobs, nor should you. There are broadcast boards that appeal to all jobposters and all jobseekers and are widely used. They include the well known Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com. At Gen Plus we offer a niched job board…which means we only have employers listed that are verifiably 50 plus friendly. We also have an online interview that employers seem to like, so if you haven’t filled yours out yet, I’d suggest you do so. As well, there are newer job boards such as SimplyHired.com and postings on Craig’s List (craigslist.org) that cater to less mainstream employers. There are other niched boards, (very few in the 50 plus demographic) so it may be worthwhile to include a search for niche boards in your desired field too.

Post your resume on every site you can, but take a careful look at your resume first. For a first easy step, take off employment that is older than twenty years. Even if you were with one employer for those twenty years, you can add a line: additional employment history available upon request. Second, do not put in education graduation dates. Check out these links for past blog articles that can help you in creating your personal brand and making your resume active:

http://genplus.blogspot.com/2005/10/need-job-at-50-plus-here-is-how-we-do.html

http://genplus.blogspot.com/2005/10/making-your-job-search-sexy.html

http://genplus.blogspot.com/2005/10/action-word-of-day.html

http://genplus.blogspot.com/2005/10/taking-it-to-cyber-streets.html

Once you feel your resume is vibrant and tells the story that you want it to, make sure that the experience you highlight is relevant to each job you are seeking. If you were a manager, but are applying for an administrative support position, focus on your administrative skills and downplay the management. Highlight your computer proficiency, or accounting experience, and projects that had a specific objective that would illustrate the type of support you want to offer.

Next, you need to target the right kind of employers. There are certain industries that are youth-oriented, so there is no point in going up against impossible competition. Marketing? Forget it. Advertising? Nope. Publishing? I don’t think so. Startup or web-based companies? Not likely. Fortune 500’s? Rarely. Teen-based brands? NEVER! But there is hope.

Extra Tip: When you go to Gen Plus and search for jobs, plug in “national” as your keyword for locations and/or in the keyword field. You’ll get most of the bigger companies that are known to recruit from the 50 plus and boomer market. As well, on any site or in any community, look for smaller ads from small businesses. Look in your community papers, both the physical papers and their online ads. Many of them will still use traditional print ads or advertise on Craig’s List. Smaller businesses (less than 750 employees…but more likely around the 1-200 employee mark) are looking to get the most bang for their buck and would rather hire a 50 plusser with great experience than a Gen Y-er who will leave at the next job opportunity.

There are some industries that are very 50 plus friendly:

Healthcare (and this is ANY job in healthcare…not just RNs) – so check out listings at your local hospitals, as well as health insurance companies, hospices, long-term care, senior living, etc.;

Retail – becoming a bigger player. Consider Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Nordstrom’s, and the like;

Finance/Banking – I realize that you came from banking and are at your wit’s end with banking, but in reality banks cannot find experienced players, so don’t give up there. Extend interest in evening and weekend shifts and possibly management (although it looks from your question that you want to steer away from management) and you might get a bite;

Airlines – more and more airlines are turning to older workers as gate and customer service agents – check out US Airways (formerly America West) and Southwest Airlines if any of those hubs are near you;

Education – school districts are desperate for help and you might find that once you get into the city system (a bit challenging, but do-able), you can move up and around. A lot of 50 plussers are heading back to school and getting credentialed so that they can teach. And private schools and childcare are always looking for staff (their credentialing is pretty easy to get) although the pay is lower than at public schools.

When you get an interview, make sure that you are current – in your style and look, your hairstyle, your accessories – and up to speed on the company you are interested in. Do your homework. If you are rusty with your computer skills, brush up. You must have Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and be familiar with Outlook for a start. Find out what the company’s challenges are so that you can address them in your interview. Remember, no one can ask you your age and you are not required to give out information on your family status or anything that addresses your age (other than education graduation dates on a job application).

But most important of all: do not set out thinking that you are competing with a 20-something. Set out thinking about your assets and how you can help a company overcome their challenges. Just don’t give up. We’ve had many jobseekers use our job boards and get information from our blog. It doesn’t matter where they got their lead – from us or from any of the many job sites out there – but by not giving up, they were able to get work.

Stay positive and best of luck with your job search.

Q: I have an elderly friend who is trying to raise two granddaughters. He has recently lost his job and doesn’t seem to be hirable anywhere. He does not have a computer. Is there any way you may be able to help him?

K.S.

A: Dear K.S.,

I started Gen Plus specifically because of the type of tough situation your friend finds himself in. Many current job searches require the use of a computer because many applications are now expected to come in online. Your friend will have a bit of a challenge, but he can access computers for free at most local libraries and he may have to do so if he cannot use a friend’s.

The Gen Plus system is an internet service as with many current services and job banks today. If he cannot use a computer at a local library, perhaps a friend, such as yourself can post his resume on the site and look for potential positions to apply for. There are many, many job banks that allow jobseekers to post resumes. There are very few that cater specifically to the 50 plus demographic, however, he should post his resume in as many places as he can possibly find, including Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com. He’ll have to do some legwork and call the HR department at any company he is interested in pursuing and ask to fill out a manual (rather than online generated) job application.

In the body copy, headline or objective of the resume builder, note “phone calls only please” or put your email address instead. That way recruiters will have a way to contact him other than via email.

In the short term and to secure some immediate funds, I’d recommend that your friend register with every temporary agency in the area (such as Kelly Services who have assignments across the US) so he can get quick temporary assignments. Also, retail outlets (like Home Depot and WalMart) can be very senior friendly in terms of immediate hiring.

Wendy, founder Gen Plus

“I’m 57 and have been “laid off” from my sales job. It will be hard for me to get a new job in sales in my field, so I’m looking at other areas. But I’m wondering if retraining is even worthwhile? I already have skills and a track record in sales. So, isn’t it a waste?”

Frank, NJ

Dear Frank,

There is nothing more bruising to the ego than being let go, regardless of how it is positioned. I can empathize with the challenge of finding a sales job at 57, especially if you are competing against much younger talent. Ray Kurzweil, author of “The Singularity is Near“, a fascinating look at our aging society and thoughts and perceptions on where we are going in relation to age and technology.

Here are some “age” facts that Kruzweil shares on life expectancy:

In the Cromagnum era, average life expectancy was 18
In Ancient Egypt: 25
In Medieval Europe (1400): 30
In Europe and US in the 1800′s: 37
In 1900 in the US: 48
And in 2002 in the US: 78

So, in my opinion, for many reasons (job search only being one of the reasons) it can certainly pays to take training. And if Kurzwiel’s projections are right, we’ll be living into our hundreds in this generation. So, what else are you going to do for the next young 20 – 30 years and presumably more?

And just to add more to the perspective, Monster.com founder, Jeff Taylor, is starting up Eons Inc. of Charlestown. And he is targeting the 50- to 100-year-old market.

So, as I see it, 50 is the new 30. 100 is the new 70. Go ahead. Retrain. You’ll have the time to use your newly acquired skills.

Wendy

I am very well qualified in my field but am finding that most employers in my field want full-time people. What would you suggest? Thanks.”

Dear LS,

You are experiencing the challenge facing many 50 plussers in this decade. While I don’t know your specifics, I assume you are either being forced into retirement, or are no longer able to work full time. In either case, 50 plussers are experiencing ageism before any other consideration. While you may be highly qualified in your field, it is possible that your field is not ready to accomodate the reality of our aging population. You have a few options:

If you have an interested employer, you need to provide them with a proposal showing them the cost-effectiveness of bringing you on part time. As with any business it is always about the WIFM (What’s In It For Me?)

You may try to sell your services as an independant contractor (consultant, self-employed.) You will not be eligible for any employee benefits, but you may be able to command an hourly wage.

You may have to look at entering a different field. Fields that are hurting for want of skilled workers are: medical assistance and allied health professions, teaching (serious shortages and 50 plussers are considered highly reliable in this field), pharmacy, retail sales (think WalMart, Home Depot, but realize that managers are in hot demand as well), and banking. Even though you may not have the specific skill, you can translate your resume to address the skills these fields are looking for. You may need to follow a short certification, and you will likely be looking at a cut in pay, but this is a great area to get a renewed foot in the door.

Get yourself visible. You MUST use all venues at your disposal to be seen. Use all online niched (www.genplususa.com) and non-niched (e.g. www.monster.com, www.careerbuilder.com) job search programs, make as many contacts as you can, send resumes to companies you are targeting and make your job search a full time job. If you have the opportunity to post your resume, do so. Often, HR professionals, facing a tough posting, will mine online resumes to try to identify suitable candidates.
