There is a new search site/community board focused on plastic surgery (breast). At About Plastic Surgery, you’ll find FAQs on topics from breast augmentation to breast reduction. There is a national surgeon locator and other good information on the topic. The following advertorial, from the staff at ABS, previews some of the info you’ll find there.

Many people do not understand exactly what the process of a plastic surgery procedure entails. Generally, we have been socialized to think that plastic surgery options are sought as artificial enhancement to retain their youth. And, while this view is not entirely false in all cases, it is important to know, if you are curious about the subject of plastic surgery, that there is often more to
it than this. While plastic surgery does indeed involve artificial changes in appearance, we all know of the broad scope of applications — from breast enhancment, to recontruction and reduction.

A good procedure to use as an example in exploring this assertion is breast-centered plastic surgery, often referred to simply as breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation tends to be an easy surgery to point to for people who are cautious regarding plastic surgery. Regardless of the reason (cosmetic or surgical necessity), breast surgeries address all sorts of different issues that people may have with their bodies. Many women with naturally large breasts explore plastic surgery as a means of breast reduction, due to soreness or discomfort resulting from heavier breasts. Additionally, many women who have battled cancer and had to have part or all of their breasts amputated, turn to plastic surgery for reconstructive purposes. Our site, About Plastic Surgery, offers specific and focused information on this topic, explaining different types of breast surgeries, and the specific medical procedures involved in them.

While breast augmentation is often used as a procedure for enlargement, researching some of its other uses can help you to understand the general scope of plastic surgery, and its implications. Understanding the full scope of the concept and range of procedures may help you to determine your own feelings on the subject. Some people turn to breast augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty, etc. out of a desire for more youthful and attractive appearances. Others seek to address natural imperfections, or areas affected by sickness or injury. Whatever the case, and whatever your feelings on it, the capability of plastic surgery reaches beyond what you might expect.

A couple more gift ideas. This small gift-selection focuses on low price options, given the state of the economy and our pocketbooks. I particularly like when companies offer more than a token donation to a charity.

Help others

Here are two that I like:

The American Heart Association is already taking donations toward their Go Red for Women February fundraising campaign. Here are a couple of companies supporting the cause with donations.

IsabelleGraceJewelry.com is donating 20% of proceeds from their fill in names of necklaces to the American Heart Association.

The Ruby Squared Necklace ($85) is a funky little piece — an outline square accented with a ruby in the corner, and is available in either Sterling Silver or Vermeil. The Ruby Heart Necklace ($42) has a tiny heart center and ruby stone accents. Also available in Sterling Silver or Vermeil. The Puffy Gold Heart w/ Ruby ($80) is completely handmade out of .999 fine silver and 22kt gold. It is finished with a hammered effect and topped with a ruby stone — all great ways to Go Red!

Edible Gifts Plus has pledged to donate 15% of proceeds from their Go Red Collection to the American Heart Association. I love these.

The Gourmet Getaway Tote ($19.99) comes in Cranberry Red and is made out of neoprene with a sturdy zip closure to keep food hot or cold for up to four hours. Check out the adorable Big Hug Mug ($14.95)! The mug sports a huge heart; a great way to show you support the American Heart Association.

You can also donate directly to the American Heart Association’s Go Red campaign.

Help your wallet

Help yourself

AND if you want to give yourself a real gift under $20, go see Hugo and definitely in 3D. This brilliant film by the more human than human Martin Scorcese, takes us into the world of Hugo, an orphaned boy living in a Paris train station in the 1930′s. The book “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” by Brian Selznick, is magic and is created almost in storyboard form. A vist to the website, an absolute must. There are a million plot summaries out there, so I won’t do the reveal, but I will tell you why this is a must-see movie. This is a movie in the old school style of character discovery combined with the sheer magic of superlative direction, camerawork and 3D technology. The reason the 3-D effects are so wonderful is because the set staging is so deeply layered. From looking through layers and layers of clock gears, to staircases that seem to descend to the bowels of the earth and up to the heavens, smoke, steam, and all the “Dickens”-ian texture that an imagination can evoke, makes the 2-D version rich. The 3-D takes you right into this 1930′s world.

Scorsese brings us into the intimate world of Hugo (Asa Butterfield), along with the sub-plots of all the rich characters that spend their lives in and around the train station — all stuck in time. Through Hugo’s clock-eyes, they gradually all move from their stiff time-bound existences into lives that can be lived. There is magic within magic as, again, through Hugo, we meet George Melies, (sigh…the great Ben Kingsley) – historically considered one of the great filmmakers from the 1890′s to the 1920′s, particularly regarding his amazing use of film and special effects, and experience Scorsese’s craftmanship as he brilliantly recreates Melies film life from Hugo’s still innocent, yet street-hardened eyes.

The movie runs long, but you need that time to absorb the incredible detail, the unweaving of the plot by a top-tier cast and when the movie ends, you don’t want to leave the party.

There is nothing more frustrating, especially when you are scrimping and saving on every last dime, to find the right gift for those you love, know well and…who basically…don’t need anything. So here is the first installment of some of the sweet pickings I’ve been able to find. Unique, interesting, and since they all appealed to me, I figure they might appeal to you!

First is an unusual memoir/cookbook by none other than the always amazing Linda Evans. Yes, I have a fireplace, and yes, I LOVE to curl up with a good book. But what I love the best is when I can curl up with a good book and smell dinner cooking in the other room. For those of us boomers who watched every episode of Dynasty with bated breath, Linda Evans was beauty personified. But who knew she was a great chef, too? In her truly delightful book, Recipes for Life, My Memories, Evans weaves her life story with recipes from those periods in her life, including recipes from many of her celebrity friends (like Leslie and Tony Curtis’ Lemon Souffle with Raspberry Sauce!). It’s an inventive take on creating a memoir and the peek inside her life and her ability to rebound (with gusto) from the bumps in the road of her life, make for a really fresh read. Here’s a freebie recipe:

Linda’s Famed Artichoke Dip
By Linda Evans,
Author of Recipes For Life: My Memories

I’ve been making my artichoke dip for years. Practically everyone who has ever tasted it has asked me for the recipe. It’s perfect for large parties or for smaller, intimate gatherings. Or when your husband’s ex-wife comes to dinner! The secret here is to use the artichoke bottoms, not the hearts. Artichoke hearts may be easier to find, they don’t produce the same results. The recipe easily doubles or triples for large gatherings. You can also replace the artichokes with 7 ounces of lump crab meat for a delicious variation.

MAKES 6 SERVINGS

1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, at room temperature
½ cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon Tabasco (or more, to taste)
1½ tablespoons thinly sliced scallions (white part only)
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (I prefer Parmigiano-Reggiano)
1 (13¾ ounce) can artichoke bottoms (not hearts), drained and finely diced

Preheat oven to 350°F.

With an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese with the mayonnaise. One by one, blend in the Tabasco sauce, scallions, and Parmesan.

Using a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, fold in the artichokes (don’t use the mixer for this).

Spoon the mixture into a 3-cup baking dish and bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm with crackers.

The above is an excerpt from the book Recipes For Life: My Memories by Linda Evans.

Here’s a coupon site that gives as it receives. What if every purchase you made at 2,500 retailers (from Amazon to Zales) earned a free donation for your favorite charity?

GoodShop.com is an online shopping mall that donates a percentage of each purchase from more than 2,500 stores to the charity or school of your choice. I’ve tried it out and while I couldn’t find some of the charities I wanted to donate to, I was able to find enough to make this site worthy of a mention. It also provides over 100,000 of coupons and free shipping deals so you save a bit of money. If you are an online shopper, like me, this is a good find.

Chocolate. Chocolate. So many choices and isn’t it nice to find something new and interesting in the world of chocolate? Yum…Frangelico Truffles are created by renowned chocolatier, Maribel Lieberman, chef/owner of MarieBelle Fine Chocolates in New York.

The truffles are available at Neiman Marcus stores and online (for those without a Neiman Marcus near them) and come beautifully packaged in five different assortments to chose from, starting at just $15– a reasonably priced for the chocolate lovers in your life!

Forever in Blue Jeans, Baby. The master of making a Boomer swoon, Neil Diamond, is justabout to release a long-awaited compilation CD of 23 of his best-loved hits from the 1960′s to 2008. With his inside recollection liner notes and the authenticity behind the original studio recordings, who wouldn’t want this as a Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza or … ANY kind of reason for a present? Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings The Very Best of Neil Diamond – The Original Studio Recordings on Tuesday, December 6.

I’ll let you know what else I find that is super special.

I love a good read. And I love the feeling I get from a book that I just don’t want to put down. That is the case with The Map of True Places (HarperCollins;), by Brunonia Barry, the New York Times bestselling author of The Lace Reader .

It is a kind of a coming-of-age story – when your age is in your thirties and you should have gone through this soul search at a much younger age. The heroine, Zee, is a Boston psychotherapist, who had to grow up too fast to come of age as a gir. Her life gets turned inside out and upside down when a patient’s crisis and her ill father’s need for her care throws her into a place that she doesn’t want to, but must revisit.

There are quite a few turns and twists in the plotline, so I don’t want to give away anything, other than to tell you that Zee’s story starts out with a bizarre and wild past that morphs into a rigidly controlled present. The rigidity is paralleled by her father’s illness, her return to Salem (some delicious witchiness that Salem tourism conjures up) and her desire for freedom expresses in Yeats, Hawthorne, and star (and love) searching. As far as the plot went, unfortunately I kind of saw everything coming, as the author didn’t (purposefully or not) adequately hide important clues and information to the deep and dark past along the way. I would have preferred to be more surprised. But while the plotline itself may not be perfect, Barry’s understanding of her characters and how she unfolds their emotional lives to the reader is what makes this book move.

At middle age, we are all coming to terms with the fact that our parents are also aging and that they will need our help to transition from old age to old, old age, and from old, old age to death. In this book, Zee is much younger than middle age. Her father’s demise is very young (and a bit too close in age to our middle age for comfort), resulting in quite a few moments that had me recoiling from my fears of my old, old age.

Barry takes the reader deep into the mind of Zee, her father, and all the players that make this book a compelling read. I could not put it down – which for me, with no extra time on my hands, tells you that it held me from beginning to end.

The Map of True Places is almost about real places, but more, it is about Zee heading out on an emotional and physical journey to find her place without hiding from an emotionally crippled past. Worth the read.

Feel free to share your own thoughts about finding your own place in life and Harper Collins may have some additional copies I can send your way.

Who’d have thunk that a film about the creation of Facebook would have you sitting on the edge of your seat for close to 2 hours? I was very curious to see the movie, particularly since I started blogging in early 2005…just as blogs were starting to be explored outside the realm of solely personal online diaries. I experienced the Facebook revolution from the perspective of a niche blogger and watched (and continue to watch) Boomers and 50 Plussers weigh in on whether social networking was their cup of tea. Even today, when I lecture to small groups (where we can enjoy robust participation), many attendees reject Facebook. In my opinion, rejecting the notion of Facebook is like saying it doesn’t exist, or burying one’s head in the sand. Just as Facebook revolutionized online socialization, so too, does this movie revitalize the notion of the ability of smart dialogue to move the plot forward with every word and every scene.

For those who haven’t yet seen it, it is a must — both for the story of the evolution of the phenomena (regardless of whether or not there has been artistic license taken), and because it is a fantastically crafted film. Viscerally directed by David Fincher and extraordinarily written by Aaron Sorkin (based on the book “The Accidental Billionaires” by Ben Mezrich), the audience follows the creation, implementation and success of the Facebook revolution. We follow the unmatched genius of Mark Zuckerberg played by uber-talented Jesse Eisenberg and his Harvard undergrad partner, Edourdo Savorin, played by Andrew Garfield, as they spark together and fuel a wild ride to the success of Facebook. Because the storyline follows the multiple lawsuits (over ownership of the original idea) and uses the deposition and discovery process as the template for the plot, every scene, every point of view, pushes the plot forward. It is fast-paced and furious, as was the creative force behind the programming.

Heck, even the movie website is exhiliarating. I dare you to head over there without experiencing heart palpitations. Even if you know the general story, the competing POVs, the incredible dialogue, soundtrack (Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross), and the surprising performances are worth the film.

Definitely one that will stay with you for a long time, and that will take you back to your days of the wild energy, creative enthusiasm and take-no-prisoners ‘tude of your college days.

What? Life after porn? What is Janet writing about now, you ask? Yegads. Well, last night I met a new friend and very cool guy while watching the Lakers’ game. Michael Abbott is an indie producer/director and DOP (director of photography) and I had a great chat about his new movie, “Exxxit” - over some very loud Lakers’ fan cheering.

You may know of Michael because of his Sundance nominated film Expired and, if not, his company website gives you his flavor — exactly what you’d expect and not disappointing in the least.

He invited me to attend the premiere of his latest flick “Exxxit: Life After Porn”, which I couldn’t manage, but here is a trailer. Made me want to see it.

EXXXIT is an exploration into the personal side of one of the biggest exports the city of Los Angeles has to offer: the 6 billion dollar a year pornography industry. In their own words, over a dozen men and women who have retired from the porn industry, recount their life and times in the business, and how it’s led to where they are today. Unbiased, unfiltered and surprisingly, human.

And guess what? Many of them are Boomers and SOME are 50 plussers.

Michael Abbott:

For the first time in my career, I stepped aside from producing or directing and am the cinematographer for this very interesting and truly entertaining film that puts the focus on truly the most beautiful part of the human body of porn stars.. the heart.

If you live in LA and want to support and indie filmmaker, the premiere is:

Date: Thursday, June 10, 2010

Time: 2:30pm — BEFORE the Laker’s game!

Location: Laemmle’s Sunset 5 Theatre – 8000 W. Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles, CA (at Crescent Heights)

I had the pleasure of previewing the premiere episode and I have to say I got a few chuckles and had to dry my eyes a couple of times, too. The demographic is a bit older than many of my readers, but we’re not that far behind and the issues (especially dating) will resonate with you. A “lite”, fun, don’t-take-yourself-too-seriously, way to enjoy a 1/2 hour of your time — I actually watched the full episode, which means it held my interest.

As always, with any reality show, the draw is the characters you meet – the first show follows the women and they were worth the peek (love the ex-nun). I’m sure the episodes with the men will be just as entertaining.

When any new movie comes out that appeals to my 9-year old, we “HAVE” to go. We “MUST”. Otherwise, she’ll just “DIE!” This past Sunday night, I did a very unparent-like thing. I took my daughter to the 7 pm showing of Disney’s “The Princess and The Frog”. OK. It is wonderful. Do you remember the feeling of the richness, the warmth of the early Disney movies? When as a child your breath was just taken away? You laughed, you cried, you wanted to be Cinderella, or Pinocchio. This film actually recaptures that feeling, with a few twists.

The princess is a poor girl, Tiana, with dreams of owning her own restaurant set in early heyday of New Orleans
(1920′s). She’s black, which turns her into an inspirational, aspirational role model for all girls, and especially black girls who’ve only grown up with quite white princesses (except for the occasional Pocahontas or Princess Jasmine).

On the New Orleans side of things…if you’ve ever been there, walked the French Quarter, eaten beignets powdered with sugar, or tried some gumbo, Disney captured the authenticity of the old city in animation form.

It got me. The whole kit and kaboodle. The animation, the characters, the story. And I’m 50.

There is no denying. This has been a really, really bad year. I’ve never had so many talented friends out of work and struggling — looking for jobs for almost two years. How is that possible? And there are much worse things than that. But I don’t want to head in that direction for this post. Nevertheless, going into this holiday season, people need something to make them feel hope. And the message in this movie for children and the adults that house their own children hearts, is that if a little girl in New Orleans, can find strength within herself to really flourish, then we should be able to as well. Her lesson, and ours, is that it can’t be about what you want. It has to be about what you need. And we all need love. Real supportive, family-building love.

Second. The music is just fantastic. Randy Newman wrote a host of songs, embracing the full flavor of New Orleans, plus, plus, plus.

Third. The relationship between Tiana and her father serves as a thematic reminder of the importance of the parent in the life and shaping of a child. Her entire self-path is determined by the impressions her dad made on her as she grew up and lived through his own dreams and struggles. And she still had to struggle herself to understand the true lessons of that pivotal relationship.

Fourth. Did I say this yet? The music is beyond fantastic.

If you need a lift…then…yes. This movie will do it for you. Take your hard won $10 and get a ticket. It will be one of your best $10 spends this season. Say ”bonjour” to Dr. Facilier for me. D’accord?

There are two aspects to the LA Auto Show that have captured my attention this year. The first is the innovation that is emerging in sustainable energy (and I’ll have a post just on the green cars I enjoyed test driving.) The second is the continual shakeup in the auto industy — this time at GM.

By now, everyone knows that GM Pres, Fritz Henderson, was ousted by the board on Tuesday. I was at a Chevrolet media event at the time, lagging behind after all the other media had left, talking to a PR woman I know at GM about innovations in social media, when all the executives were ushered away for an emergency confab. And you knew by the urgency, that it was bad. By the time they’d emerged, all white-faced, I was already getting feeds regarding a GM press conference in a few minutes. In a matter of minutes, the world knew that there had been another shake up at GM.

From my position, next day, on the floor, listening to Bob Lutz’s (replacing Fritz Henderson as keynote — all the signboards papered over with Lutz’s name…ayay) excellent keynote address, to going from GM vehicle launch to vehicle launch, the execs did what they do best — smoothly and passionately presented their lines to the media. But everyone could see the wind had been knocked out of their sails. Hard to launch products when your leader has been sacked, which always means your own future becomes uncertain again. To top things off, by the end of the day, there was a huge gaffuffle over the now infamous 58- word, expletive-filled posted comment allegedly by Henderson’s daughter (identity not confirmed) on the GM Facebook page, followed by a GM media spin. Here is a good summary. And if you really want to read the full comment: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/01/did-gm-ceo-fritz-henderso_n_376229.html

I’ll stop myself from going on a rant, but I do have a few more things to say. I’ve experienced corporate drama, but not at this scale…and certainly not while sitting and watching it all unfold in front of me, an industry outsider. Regardless of whether or not this was the right move, a good move, or a bad move, Henderson’s removal right at the start of the Auto show (and the car season) definitely knocked everyone off-balance.

I wonder how it is possible that Mr. Henderson was sacked without the White House knowing about it, given our share in the company….makes me wonder if the good ole boys are retrenching themselves in the board? When a company is so big, it is so easy to forget that the employees are the ones who are the real face of the company and not really quite as disposable as pawns on a chessboard. Now the American people are a bit too invested to stand by and watch political manoueverings silently.

Personally, I root for success for GM. Aside from the fact that I, along with all of you, am now heavily financially invested in its success, the products they are producing are really good (to my consumer eye). Of course, I’ll talk about some of the cars in following posts. The thrill of coming as media to the show, is the opportunity to talk directly to the designers and product managers, who aim for transparency, who definitely have passion for their products, and who answer any question without hesitation (at least to me, they did.) Overall, what I experienced was that it didn’t matter whether it was GM, Ford, Mercedes, BMW or any other company…the people who work for the car companies believe in their products and they all recognize that a huge mindset shift is not only taking place, but has to take place. Is there a far way to go? Yes. Decades. But is the auto industry moving in the right direction? Yes.

It isn’t possible to imagine the American car industry turning around the whole ship in a year or two. Imagine the ship. When you are a small, nimble company, yes, sure, you can spin on a dime. See a big iceberg ahead? You can easily steer around it because you don’t have big bulk to move. But when you are as big as GM, or Ford, or Chrysler…to turn the ship, you have to lay in the course and turn it one little tiny degree at a time…miles ahead of the iceberg. Forget that thousands of people have been laid off at the carmakers. What that has done is put the same massive amount of work on the shoulders of less people. That doesn’t make a company more nimble…it just makes it leaner. Focusing GM on fewer lines makes is leaner, and a bit more nimble…but still, to expect a company of this size to make seismic shifts in a nanosecond…won’t happen…fired President or no. It will take years to redirect the ship and recognizing that, and making choices that will shape decades, is the direction that needs to be taken.

Renewable energy, alternative fuel systems…that is the direction to go, and talking to the designers and engineers and product managers…it isn’t just the car companies that have to make the shift. So the right direction is around the iceberg. And not just the car companies. Our entire culture, infrastructure and economy needs to move around the iceberg, a degree at a time.
