I have applications for news, weather, yelp, facebook, twitter & on & on. But I had not tried blogging from the wordpress app. So today is the inaugural of my first Droid WordPress app. If it posts & you can read it, I’ll be in 7th heaven. Not sure if I can attach pics or video, but if I can you can be sure I will. Post on!

He’s dark and lean, speaks to me in a deep, dangerous voice and dares me to adventure where I’ve never dared before. He’s Droid X and he’s the new love in my life. I shouted out my love on my personal Facebook page and now I must shout it out to the Gen Plus world. If you are into the “smartphone” technology, or even if you are a cell phone user, by now, you’ve heard something about the new Droid X. Seriously, I have no clue how it works, but it is a piece of genius and gives you a glimpse into what the future holds in handhelds.

What is being hailed as fantastic are the video capabilities (yes, great), the larger screen, the HD camera (really good), the ability to upload to your television set, plus a lot of the features that the iPhone boasts — touch technology that is really, really good and makes you feel like YOU are the reporter on CNN playing with the interactive flat panel.

But there a couple of features that I’m insane over. You can have an app for just about anything and more are being created by the minute — which means that any glitches will have a fix-it app in about a heartbeat. (There is a big challenge with searching and sorting email other than GMail, and I’m not too keen on the apps out there yet, but there will be a better one soon, I’m positive.)

And there is a feature called “Swype”, where you drag your finger from letter to letter to type your text or email rather than finger-type it. It’s extremely cool once you get the hang of it and it is pretty fast.

There are SEVEN home screens so you can order your life just the way you like it. It can almost function like a laptop on the road and certainly, for someone like me, who is away from the desk most of the day, yet needs to stay connected to my team in the field and clients trying to reach me, this is the perfect smartphone.

Short of creating long documents or complicated spreadsheets, I can do pretty much anything else with this sleek machine. Now if only he could dance.

Here’s a CNET preview pre-release:

Yes, dear readers, I plan to drag you, kicking and screaming, into the comments section of my posts. Thank you!

There has been quite an uproar over the new Facebook privacy settings, but also a lot of confusion over what is being roared about. I thought it might be helpful to fill you in without any technical overload. As in all social networks, you have or don’t have control over what is seen publicly. Social networks WANT you to be visible because it increases their perceived membership and everytime someone clicks on a link you send them from another part of that social network, it also increases page views (the quantifier for how advertisers decide to spend their marketing dollars.)

It is in the best interest of a social network to have everyone visible to the world all the time. So usually there are default privacy settings, which usually increase who can see you, rather than limit who sees you. Facebook has always had privacy default settings to a broader default (usually Friends or Friends of Friends) including your identifiers (name, city) that are part of common search to anyone. All other settings can be managed by the user, however, many users do not double-check their privacy settings.

With the latest change, Facebook info is now being communicated to the larger web, based on what pages and sites you visit and this info gets shared with your friends (like the games you play). By default, it is set to allow. In order to disallow, you need to go into your privacy settings and untick the “allow” box. A lot of work and digging for the casual user. There are glitches in the disallow, and because some people have still found their comments or choices showing up on the web, they have cancelled their accounts. (Some private chats apparently also became public through a glitch, but has since been repaired.)

Here’s my feeling — when you are writing something online, there is ALWAYS the risk that your word will show up somewhere you don’t want them to. Or that by googling your name, something about you will come up on someone else’s site, or in a picture, randomly (or intentionally) posted. That means that you MUST pay attention to what you say. Assume your private messages, could, by a software error, become public. Or that your scathing email may not be as confidential as you think. Or that your post might get hijacked and published by someone else under their name without giving you credit or asking for permission.

All this info is “cloud” info — it isn’t ours. What you write on Facebook, sits on Facebook servers. Not yours. Your Gmail sits on Google servers, not yours. Ditto for Twitter, your blog, Google buzz, classmates…and on and on and on. Just because we are used to it and use it, still doesn’t mean it is as private as you think.

If you enjoy Facebook, or use it for marketing your business, keep using it. Why not? Just always remember not to get lulled into a false sense of online security.

The latest news about Twitter is that it will be monetizing tweets by allowing corporate advertisers to pay high premiums for tweets with “resonance”. Unlike Google ads where you are charged per click, Twitter is going to charge based on the relevance and desirability of the tweet. Personally, as a blogger and tweeter, I’m always leery of advertising seeping its way into really fantastic social media models. However, depending upon how Twitter rolls this out, it might work.

So far, the only experience I’ve had is being hit by a pop-up when logging into my account. If that’s it, then no good. Anyone know what’s really going on? Found a couple of articles, a good q & a on Huffington Post, and a decent overview at the Vancouver Sun. Not sure that Tweeters will stick with the microblogging site if they perceive the ads as even MORE spam than is already there. I’ll keep my eyes on this one.

There are two aspects to the LA Auto Show that have captured my attention this year. The first is the innovation that is emerging in sustainable energy (and I’ll have a post just on the green cars I enjoyed test driving.) The second is the continual shakeup in the auto industy — this time at GM.

By now, everyone knows that GM Pres, Fritz Henderson, was ousted by the board on Tuesday. I was at a Chevrolet media event at the time, lagging behind after all the other media had left, talking to a PR woman I know at GM about innovations in social media, when all the executives were ushered away for an emergency confab. And you knew by the urgency, that it was bad. By the time they’d emerged, all white-faced, I was already getting feeds regarding a GM press conference in a few minutes. In a matter of minutes, the world knew that there had been another shake up at GM.

From my position, next day, on the floor, listening to Bob Lutz’s (replacing Fritz Henderson as keynote — all the signboards papered over with Lutz’s name…ayay) excellent keynote address, to going from GM vehicle launch to vehicle launch, the execs did what they do best — smoothly and passionately presented their lines to the media. But everyone could see the wind had been knocked out of their sails. Hard to launch products when your leader has been sacked, which always means your own future becomes uncertain again. To top things off, by the end of the day, there was a huge gaffuffle over the now infamous 58- word, expletive-filled posted comment allegedly by Henderson’s daughter (identity not confirmed) on the GM Facebook page, followed by a GM media spin. Here is a good summary. And if you really want to read the full comment: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/01/did-gm-ceo-fritz-henderso_n_376229.html

I’ll stop myself from going on a rant, but I do have a few more things to say. I’ve experienced corporate drama, but not at this scale…and certainly not while sitting and watching it all unfold in front of me, an industry outsider. Regardless of whether or not this was the right move, a good move, or a bad move, Henderson’s removal right at the start of the Auto show (and the car season) definitely knocked everyone off-balance.

I wonder how it is possible that Mr. Henderson was sacked without the White House knowing about it, given our share in the company….makes me wonder if the good ole boys are retrenching themselves in the board? When a company is so big, it is so easy to forget that the employees are the ones who are the real face of the company and not really quite as disposable as pawns on a chessboard. Now the American people are a bit too invested to stand by and watch political manoueverings silently.

Personally, I root for success for GM. Aside from the fact that I, along with all of you, am now heavily financially invested in its success, the products they are producing are really good (to my consumer eye). Of course, I’ll talk about some of the cars in following posts. The thrill of coming as media to the show, is the opportunity to talk directly to the designers and product managers, who aim for transparency, who definitely have passion for their products, and who answer any question without hesitation (at least to me, they did.) Overall, what I experienced was that it didn’t matter whether it was GM, Ford, Mercedes, BMW or any other company…the people who work for the car companies believe in their products and they all recognize that a huge mindset shift is not only taking place, but has to take place. Is there a far way to go? Yes. Decades. But is the auto industry moving in the right direction? Yes.

It isn’t possible to imagine the American car industry turning around the whole ship in a year or two. Imagine the ship. When you are a small, nimble company, yes, sure, you can spin on a dime. See a big iceberg ahead? You can easily steer around it because you don’t have big bulk to move. But when you are as big as GM, or Ford, or Chrysler…to turn the ship, you have to lay in the course and turn it one little tiny degree at a time…miles ahead of the iceberg. Forget that thousands of people have been laid off at the carmakers. What that has done is put the same massive amount of work on the shoulders of less people. That doesn’t make a company more nimble…it just makes it leaner. Focusing GM on fewer lines makes is leaner, and a bit more nimble…but still, to expect a company of this size to make seismic shifts in a nanosecond…won’t happen…fired President or no. It will take years to redirect the ship and recognizing that, and making choices that will shape decades, is the direction that needs to be taken.

Renewable energy, alternative fuel systems…that is the direction to go, and talking to the designers and engineers and product managers…it isn’t just the car companies that have to make the shift. So the right direction is around the iceberg. And not just the car companies. Our entire culture, infrastructure and economy needs to move around the iceberg, a degree at a time.

The great thing about the Auto Show media events is that you get to speak with the designers and marketers and really get inside their heads and their visions for their cars. Today’s Chevrolet event highlighted the Volt and the Cruze. The designers did a good job showcasing the clean lines, crisp looks and the interior detailing. I was able to have a chat with Margaret Brooks, Marketing Director, Cruze to get her unique perspective on this vehicle’s strengths and positioning. Of course, I’m always interested in how a car will apply to the Boomer and 50 plus demographic, more so than the engine horsepower (what is that, anyway?), wheel size or base, or whatever, or how the wind slides aerodynamically over windshield to spoiler. I look at whether or not I’d buy the car.

The Cruze is going head-to-head with the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla, and it’s a good contender! The design is very good, the car feels roomier than either the Civic or the Corolla…but more than that, the interior is really nice. I could hang out in it. It’s not really the right car for me and my current lifestyle — I’m still in the minivan/SUV/station wagon category, but it is a great downsize vehicle for empty-nesters.

I asked Margaret about the point of differences in this vehicle. Basically there are 4 key areas.

The styling. No question, a strong, clean, crisp exterior.

The interior. In Margaret’s words, the vehicle boasts a “surprise interior, with a richer, more upscale feel than you’d find in a compact car.” (I agree — and lots of bells and whistles.)

Roominess. Indeed the Cruze has a large interior and is wider inside than last year due to an expanded wheel base. (You push the tires out to the max and it gives you a few more interior inches…see? I was listening.)

Fuel economy. Their new 1.4 liter turbo-charge engine (hope I got that right) combines fuel economy and fuel efficiency…to the tune of 40 mpg. Bingo. A winner.

Keep your eyes on Cruze campaigns. A very solid competitor for tight pocketbooks.

I’m heading off the to LA Auto show this week (some distinct advantages to living in LA, when the auto show comes to town!) and looking forward to learning as much as I can for all of us Boomer and 50 plus types through the backstage pass a press credential gives you. Not only do I want to see what every carmaker is coming up with in the category of green, but I’m particularly interested in our US automakers.

If you’ve been to the auto show before, there is almost too much to absorb, but I’ve set my sights on a couple of specific areas. Chevy Volt. I saw it last year in Detroit, was hoping to test drive in LA, but unfortunately that didn’t happen, so this year, I’m looking foward to get in a turn or two at the “Green Cars/LA Auto Show Ride and Drive”…I’m just beside myself with anticipation. It is a first-come, first-served chance to test out new vehicles, so hopefully my wiley ways and irrestible charm will get me a spot on the floor.

A cool GM social media component to share: Tomorrow, Monday, Nov. 30 kicks-off a series of live video webcasts, which will be available on www.ChevroletVoltage.com as well as the Chevrolet and Chevrolet Volt Facebook pages. The first webcast is at Harvard-Westlake Middle School (I have friends who’s kids went there!) at 9:40 a.m. PST for more than 800 students and staff about the basics of electricity, including why it’s important and how this common energy source can be used to transform the way we drive. Having just constructed a circuit board using C batteries, a flashlight bulb and aluminum foil with my 4th grader, I’m very interested to see how GM plans to capture the interest of these very bright kids.

The best (at least I think so) is the last webcast on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the J Restaurant & Lounge in downtown L.A. where Chevrolet Vice President Brent Dewar will announce the winner of the contest to name the greenish-silver color of the Volt. The winner gets a test drive while we get the “Top Gear” version online. (Side note: if you haven’t seen Top Gear on BBC America, you are missing out on a fantastically fun car series.)

You can tell I’m getting in gear. Stay tuned and I’ll let you in on my own particular, very consumer-framed, very menopausal woman’s views all this week.
