If you scroll down the left sidebar, you’ll see a badge from Website Grader with a score of 94 in it. That’s my score. It means that out of all the websites and blogs out there, the grader has assessed everything from content, to site indexing, to subscribers and is telling me that I rank higher than 94% of all the other websites out there. I think that is amazing. How did I do that, you ask? Content. There are SEO and SEM marketers who will be able to bump your sites by strategically working with your key words and meta tags, but I’ve used very little SEO or SEM with this website. I have many subscribers (which is kinda flattering…so thank you for being interested in my wacky world observations) and I have over 600 posted articles over a period of 5 years.

That gives me a high site index (each page gets “crawled” and then indexed by the search engines for future searches). A few months ago, when I checked my rank on Website Grader, my rank was 81. The only thing I started to do differently was be more diligent in adding tags to each post. Everything else still lies with content.

If you have a website and want to see how yours ranks, just head over to www.website.grader.com, a free SEO analytical service, and type in your url. You’ll be amazed to see what actually gets searched to give you your grade. I like to compare my rankings to those of Dosh-Dosh (www.dosh-dosh.com), an incredible blog about internet marketing, written by a mid-twenties blogger. He’s tops of the tops (99.7 on Grader and Page Rank of 6 on Google) with over 10,000 subscribers. When I see what he does, I am always humbled and I realize how much more I could be doing.

Still, 94 isn’t a grade to take lightly. I’m pretty pleased for today. Gonna have a coffee now, and give myself a virtual pat on the back. Or eat a scone.

Associated Press reporter, Roxana Hegeman, reported this morning on a Wichita Kansas’ judge’s groundbreaking decision to allow Twitter in the courtroom of a racketeering gang trial. Now, Twitter has been allowed in some courtroom’s for about a year, but this trial will attract a ton of attention as the profile runs even higher with Twitter awareness. For any of you who STILL have not investigated Twitter, head over to my page to get an idea of how it works. Basically, imagine me getting the concept of this entire blog in 140 characters and sending it immediately out to the world through the Twitter network. It is called micro-blogging, and it is so exciting because of the immediate broad reach of this new form of communication.

So this post, in micro-blog form would be something like this:

“Twitter, becomes stealth media. Federal gang trial attention skyrocketing. Brings public into the courtroom. Judge applauded by Tweeters.”

The reporter, Ron Sylvester, has been covering state trials using Twitter, but this is the first federal trial to allow live Tweeting during the trial. If it were televised, we could all watch it — but by him being “at the scene” and tweeting in the moment, we get perspective and opinion that you would never get from an overview report, or blog post at the end of the day.

Lawyers are BESIDE themselves with worry over tainting the jury, but the judge accepts Twitter as part of media. As a matter of fact, blogging is already considered in the general umbrella of media and Twitter is definitely part of that. What I like is that ground-breaking news can reach the world in 140 characters and click. What is the latest in the Senate? Head over to Twitter and search the latest bill you want to hear about. What is the latest gossip on Chris Brown (that slug)? Head over to Twitter and type in “Rihana beating”. Want to hear about AIG becoming a penny stock? Ditto. And you aren’t just hearing from any old anyone. You will hear from the decision-makers, now using Twitter to keep their constituents, clients, and public informed. Latest rumors? check. GM deal with the Feds? Check. Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar? Someone will want to talk. Just wait. It has only just begun. Stealth media. You heard it here, first.

I’ve talked about Twitter before. Twitter is a very different kind of social network — it is based on micro-blogging (think 140 character text messages to say EVERYTHING that is on your mind…well at least in that moment. Twitter is a viral phenomenon (just as MySpace was when it first caught on) and there is a lot of discussion about the merits (or not) of this type of instant thought-babble.

It took me awhile to warm up to this rather unusual way of connecting with like-minded, or not-like minded tweeters and a social networking genius friend of mine keeps pointing me in the direction of staying with it! When I was at the car show in Detroit earlier this year, it was really exciting tweeting at the launches as news broke. Standing in the media hordes, I can’t tell you how many conversations I had with other media about out Blackberrys, iPhones, etc….but I digress.

This past week, I became a bit enamored of the viral rumor…very fast-breaking trend news on innovative new products, new marketing strategies, on medical findings, on anything and everything Obama and economy. And in the midst of this, I started noticing real pops of innovation. The market is so tough right now, that anyone who wants to make it through with their businesses intact must become insanely creative with meaningful innovation.

So I’m now on the prowl. Next week, I’ll be hosting our Blogging Boomers Carnival and intend to have an assortment of interesting and unusual websites and blogs for you to explore. But for the rest of this week, I’m on the Twitter-hunt for innovation.

The California budget and economy is falling apart. 21,000 state employees are getting layoff notices in about a minute. Those remaining will be forced to take 2 day furloughs per month — but at least they’ll still have their work. The federal stimulus package was just signed by Obama, so over time, some lost ground will be regained, and states will get some relief, but, boy, oh boy. Are we in trouble.

I’ve been getting emails from readers who are so disappointed the Obama hasn’t already “fixed” this crisis. There are certainly problems with how our 2-party system in the US makes it very easy to become paralyzed and road-blocked. But, this economic freefall isn’t even a question of how our federal government works — because the economic challenges are global. The world financial leaders allowed this to happen by a serious lack of oversight combined with a Roman Empire style greed and love of excess. So it is no surprise that the cards are not just tumbling, but rather cascading down.

We are in absolutely in crisis and according to Obama, possibly heading into catastrophe. It is dire. We are all scared. And we have to get cracking… as a people and not counting on government alone…to get innovative and find the ways to cauterize the bleeding. The newly signed stimulus package is, to my mind, like half a cauterization. The artery will stop projectile bleeding (so hopefully we, the patient, won’t bleed out in 4 minutes) but there is a gaping, seeping wound.

I have the urget to go off ona tangent here (but there is a point, I promise):

A couple of years ago, I re-fractured my navicular bone (a small, but critical bone near the ankle) in my left foot. I went to a highly recommended orthopedic surgeon, Clifford Kahn. I remember meeting him for the first time. Very tall, attractive in an unusual way — with a very unorthodox full Z-Z-Top beard and cowboy boots peeking out from under the scrubs. I’d never met a doctor who didn’t actually look like a doctor, but he was incredibly brilliant and incredibly kind and he was able to put me on the right path to fixing my teeny, tiny little injury. That is not what this tangent is about. It is about the other part of Dr. Kahn’s practice — that of wound healing and care. He specialized in trauma to the foot and circulation to the feet tends to be poor as we age…resulting in very slow wound healing. Part of wound healing, as I learned, requires taking off unhealthy flesh to the point of leaving only healthy flesh, so that the wound will bleed freshly and allow nature to heal the diseased area. And often, it was necessary to work on the wound with no freezing so that the doctor would clearly know where diseased flesh ended and clean flesh began. Imagine having a deep wound cleaned with no anaesthetic. Yes, people scream in pain. I heard it…not good for a gal with a weak stomach. When I asked Dr. Kahn about that, he told me that the patients understand why the rot needs to be cut out and that they also understand why they need to communicate the pain. So that they can ultimately and hopefully heal — without amputation.

I’m not a doctor, so perhaps I didn’t understand the explanation perfectly, but that is the image I carry around in my head regarding our economy. Our government is trying to figure out what the extent of the rot is, what is salvagable and what needs to be amputated. Obama is the new head doctor and he’s hearing the screams of the patients whose rot developed on another surgeon’s watch. He took over the job, he wanted the job and now he’s got to get us out of the mess.

We are all realizing that is not going to be a short-lived crisis. Speak to any older person, let’s say 70 years and older. They will all tell you they see a struggle for the next 3-5 years until we can feel a bit of economic confidence. I agree with them. I also believe that our carbon-fuel economy will ultimately be replaced by renewable and alternative energy solutions. But that also will take a ton of time and new infrastructure building.

We all know that housing is a disaster and will be the next big item on Obama’s plate. Right next to the auto industry. If you were watching the news yesterday, both Chrysler and GM had to present their viability plans. It’s pretty bad. A big restructure is in the cards for GM and Chrysler. And a painful restructure this will be. Here is a link to the GM press conference. It will be available as of Wednesday at noon. You’ll have seen the sound bytes, but what CEO Rick Wagoner put forward in terms of the viability options is that GM projects it will cost much less to support the plans for restructure than to support a bankruptcy. 47,o0o employees will be terminated at GM and about 3,000 at Chrysler. Additionally GM and Chrysler may need $22 Billion now and ultimately as much as $39 Billion over time to bail them out.

I cannot see how we can let any of the Big 3 can go into bankruptcy. Their effect on world economy is so huge that the ramifications of letting any of these companies fail are beyond imagination. We need them to take the lead, on a global level, on renewable and alternative energy solutions, do it well and do it as quickly as they can.

Today we’ll hear the next pain solution as Obama lays out what he’s looking at regarding the housing market. Crikeys. Can’t wait.

I was inspired to write a lengthy post about the stimulus package by a comment from a reader. However, as I tried to log on this morning, my site went down. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get in — not through WordPress and not through BlueHost, my hosting company. So after realizing that this was beyond my knowledge, I called customer service at BlueHost. I was number 54 in line…which made me realize that some big, humongous problem was afoot. After 10 minutes, I was 44th in line to speak to an agent, so I went for the online chat option instead. Again, after about 5 minutes, an agent came online to let me know there was a major server outage. About 10 minutes later, my site came back online. The cold sweat subsided, but so did my passion for the post. Still planning on writing, but not til tomorrow. I’m just thrilled I didn’t lose 5 years of blog posts today.

If you haven’t yet found Twitter, then you are missing out on the new phenomenon — “Micro-blogging”. To get an idea, head over to Twitter and set up an account, or if you feel shy, visit my twitter page at www.twitter.com/GenPlus and you’ll be able to see the mini-posts that are turning the internet on its head…once again. Twitter is based on a very simple concept. You have 140 characters to tell the world what you are doing. You can update as often as you like and as you get into this world, you’ll start “following” people, and people will start “following” you. Simply because one of you said something kind of interesting…in 140 characters or less. Some view the concept as narcissistic, which it kind of is…and others are just enamored with creating social connections with virtual strangers at a very fast and broad pace.

The easiest comparison is to look at the difference between text messaging and emailing. In an email, you can go on and on, with as much detail as you like. Whoever you email, will read your note, at their leisure, and if they have something to say back, will email you. Simple.

Text messaging is an abbreviated and very immediate form or electronic messaging. You typically have about 160 characters to send a message. Which means the more said with fewer characters, the better. That’s why you’ll see acronyms for just about everything, such as:

LOL — Laugh Out Loud.

2moro — tomorrow.

Ty — thank you.

BFF — best friends forever

cu l8r — see you later

and on and on. You can get very creative.

So, now, at Twitter, blogging gets 140 characters. That translates to about 2 sentences to grab someone’s attention. And the more creative the better. Instead of saying something like “Gave up the dessert. Just gotta lose some weight.”, you might say “Decadent chocolate cheesecake almost passed lips. But I’ve gotta get into size 10 by Friday…so just said NO to heaven.”

That description might cause someone else to take a second look and decide they needed to comment back to your micro-post or even head over to take a look at your blog. Personally, I’m nosy and I just love peeping into other people’s lives…which Twitter lets me do so well. There are even awards for best tweeters. It is a bit odd, when you first head over, but you’ll find it a lot of fun once you figure out how to play!

The hurt keeps on coming. This morning Microsoft announced their 2nd quarter results and with the global economy still limping along, put plans in place to lay off 5,000 staff over the next 18 months, included 1400 who got their pink slips today.

Always go to the source: http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2009/jan09/01-22fy09Q2earnings.mspx

In light of the further deterioration of global economic conditions, Microsoft announced additional steps to manage costs, including the reduction of headcount-related expenses, vendors and contingent staff, facilities, capital expenditures and marketing. As part of this plan, Microsoft will eliminate up to 5,000 jobs in R&D, marketing, sales, finance, legal, HR, and IT over the next 18 months, including 1,400 jobs today. These initiatives will reduce the company’s annual operating expense run rate by approximately $1.5 billion and reduce fiscal year 2009 capital expenditures by $700 million.

Business Outlook

“Economic activity and IT spend slowed beyond our expectations in the quarter, and we acted quickly to reduce our cost structure and mitigate its impact,” said Chris Liddell, chief financial officer at Microsoft. “We are planning for economic uncertainty to continue through the remainder of the fiscal year, almost certainly leading to lower revenue and earnings for the second half relative to the previous year. In this environment, we will focus on outperforming our competitors and addressing our cost structure.”

And for stockholders, Microsoft is not going to make projections to the end of the fiscal year, given the volatility and uncertainty of the global economy. What that really means, is that no one can figure out what the heck is going on and how long this deterioration is going to continue. Tough day for Microsoft employees.

Mixed into the excitement of today’s inauguration, were two technological items of note that may have gotten swept a bit under the carpet. The first is the launch of Barack Obama’s Presidential website at http://www.whitehouse.gov/ Obama’s team have created the first dynamic Presidential website with a tone very much in keeping with the tone Obama set throughout his campaign for the Presidency. If you click on the site, you’ll see, right at the top right corner an email sign-up. His team plans to continue the powerful email communication strategy that won him the hearts of America. As well, there is a sense of transparency, lots of video and tons of info. I’m signed up. You should, too.

Second on the technical side is the amazing interactive 3D photo of “The Moment” — the moment of the swearing in. Attendees were encouraged to email in their pictures to CNN, from their perspective at the inaugural celebration. The result is an astounding bit of online technology developed by Microsoft Live Labs, called “Photosynth”– a truly interactive, 360 degree, multi-dimensional, multi-moment , virtual collage. When you first click on the picture, you think you are just zooming in, however, each “zoom” is another picture. I was fascinated by the close-ups of the Obama’s — pictures grabbed several moments and you can see, expression-by-expression “the moment”, even seeing Ted Kennedy smiling behind Obama. Apparently, many other photos will be added over the next few days, but even at this stage it is astounding. http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2009/44.president/inauguration/themoment/
