Twitter goes for the $$

The latest news about Twitter is that it will be monetizing tweets by allowing corporate advertisers to pay high premiums for tweets with “resonance”.  Unlike Google ads where you are charged per click, Twitter is going to charge based on the relevance and desirability of the tweet.  Personally, as a blogger and tweeter, I’m always leery of advertising seeping its way into really fantastic social media models.  However, depending upon how Twitter rolls this out, it might work.

So far, the only experience I’ve had is being hit by a pop-up when logging into my account.  If that’s it, then no good.  Anyone know what’s really going on?  Found a couple of articles, a good q & a on Huffington Post, and a decent overview at the Vancouver Sun.    Not sure that Tweeters will stick with the microblogging site if they perceive the ads as even MORE spam than is already there.  I’ll keep my eyes on this one.
